Charles R. "Cris" Strotz, M.D.

Dr. Strotz is a specialist in arthroscopic knee surgery and sports medicine.

In addition to his private practice which is focused on knee problems, he has been active on a national basis in teaching arthroscopic surgery to other orthopaedic surgeons and developing educational tools and materials to help orthopaedists evaluate and increase their knowledge of sports medicine.

He is an orthopaedic consultant for the University of California at Berkeley, and has served as an on-the-field orthopaedic consultant for the athletic department. For 10 years he was the team physician for Women ’s athletics at UC Berkeley.

Education – After graduating cum laude from Yale University with departmental honors in psychology, Dr. Strotz received his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco. Following his internship at San Francisco General Hospital, he served two years as a medical systems research analyst for the Indian Health Service branch of the Public Health Service. He returned to UC San Francisco and completed his residency training in orthopaedic surgery. As a resident, Dr. Strotz had been taught to use arthroscopy for the diagnosis of knee problems. Soon after joining Berkeley Orthopaedics, he developed an interest and expertise in arthroscopic surgery, and was one of the first surgeons in the Bay Area to use arthroscopy to treat knee injuries.

Organizations – Dr. Strotz is Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Bay Area Knee Society. He was the chair of the Committee on Evaluation – Sports Medicine for the AAOS. The committee developed tools and tests for orthopaedic surgeons to evaluate and improve their skills in sports medicine. Dr. Strotz is a reviewer for the Journal of Arthroscopy and has served on the Data Collection and Membership committees for AANA. He is the secretary/treasurer and past president of the UCSF orthopaedic alumni group.
